Energy autonomy at the pad: what role for subcontracting smes in the project?

For this 628 billion FCFA investment led by the Douala Port Power Corporation (DPPC), the share to be reserved for local subcontracting SMEs has yet to be addressed.

The Port Authority of Douala (PAD) is preparing to reach a historic milestone in its modernization strategy with the launch of an ambitious 628 billion FCFA investment project aimed at guaranteeing its energy autonomy. The project is managed by the Douala Port Power Corporation (DPPC) and seeks to secure logistical activities. It involves the construction of a 300 MW power plant and a gas pipeline linking Kribi to Douala. For the project initiators, this is not merely an infrastructure site, but a development catalyst for the national industrial ecosystem.

This project thus emerges as a major pool of opportunities for SMEs. The end of power outages and load shedding could allow subcontractors operating within the port zone to optimize their production cycles and drastically reduce their economic losses. Beyond the operational phase, the construction stage is expected to generate more than 1,100 jobs, providing a significant outlet for local companies specializing in construction(BTP), industrial maintenance, and logistical services. Furthermore, the component dedicated to technology transfer represents a long-term benefit, enabling Cameroonian engineers and technicians to acquire cutting-edge expertise essential for the technical sustainability of our facilities.

By stabilizing the energy supply, the projectnot only improves the efficiency of the port hub but also strengthens there silience of SMEs throughout the city of Douala by injecting surplus energy into the urban grid. The challenge for Cameroonian subcontracting is now to position itself as an indispensable partner in this "quayside energy revolution" to transform this colossal investment into a true victory for local industry.
