Cameroon-nigeria : a historic agreement to secure search and rescue (sar) operations

The Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhè, and his Nigerian counterpart, Festus Keyamo, signed a bilateral cooperation agreement on February 27, 2026, regarding the rescue of aircraft in distress. This legal instrument strengthens airspace security and deepens relations between the two sub-regional giants.

In strict compliance with the 1944 Chicago Convention, this agreement defines a rigorous operational framework for assisting aircraft. The missions assigned to both States include coordinating interventions in shared responsibility zones, pooling search resources, and organizing simulation exercises under the aegis of the CCAA. The presence of high-ranking dignitaries, including the Minister of Defense and the Nigerian High Commissioner, underscores the strategic dimension of this act, initiated under the leadership of Presidents Paul Biya and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

A lever for technical expertise and aeronauticalsubcontracting

For the SPX-CMR, this rapprochement between Cameroon and Nigeria in the field of civil aviation opens significant perspectives for technological and logistical "Local Content." The implementation of the SAR agreement requires cutting-edge equipment and high-precision maintenance.

"Securing our shared air space requires advanced communication infrastructure and rapid intervention assets. For our SMEs specializing in aeronautical maintenance, navigation electronics, and emergency logistics, a specialized service market is taking shape at the regional level," explains an air transport consultant. The necessity of maintaining "sufficient and operational" intervention resources constitutes a maintenance contract opportunity for qualified local providers.

This exemplary cooperation also promotes technology transfer and capacity building for national engineers. For the members of the Exchange, this agreement serves as a reminder that compliance with international standards (ICAO) is the key to accessing subcontracting markets linked to the modernization of air navigation in Central and West Africa.
