Opening of mc14 in yaoundé: cameroon at the heart of global trade reform

It is official. This Thursday, March 26, 2026,Yaoundé became the world’s trade capital. The 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (MC14) opened its doors at the Palais des Congrès, marking a historic turning point for Central Africa and the multilateral system.

Under the chairmanship of Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, Cameroon’s Minister of Trade, and in the presence of the WTO Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over 3,000 delegates and ministers from 166 countries have gathered for this "Turning Point Conference." The stakes are high: restoring the dispute settlement mechanism, adapting rules to digital trade, and addressing global food security challenges.

Africa speaks with one voice

From the opening ceremony, the tone was set: the African continent, representing 54 countries and 1.4 billion people, demands a profound reform of a system deemed inequitable. As noted by the Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), John Denton, the survival of the WTO is crucial: a dissolution of the organization would lead to a GDP drop of more than 6% for Sub-Saharan Africa.

What impact for Cameroonian subcontractors?

For the SPX-CMR, holding this summit on our soil is not just a diplomatic victory; it is an industrial opportunity. "The fact that the global trade rules for the next decade are being decided here in Yaoundé is a strong signal. For our subcontracting SMEs, discussions on reducing agricultural subsidies and investment facilitation are essential. If Yaoundé succeeds in advancing the agreement on digital trade, our local businesses will have more fluid and secure access to global value chains. Now is the time for Cameroonian subcontracting to position itself according to international standards", explains a Manager at the SPX-CMR.

Cameroon: guarantor of the survival of multilateralism

Despite rumors and pressures, Cameroon has demonstrated its exceptional organizational capacity. The proceedings, which continue until March 29, are expected to result in "strong political signals" to prevent the fragmentation of the global economy.
