Cfa 2,426 billion investment in water access by 2030: a windfall for subcontracting smes
The Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange of Cameroon(SPX-CMR) is calling on SMEs to prepare for the vast opportunities emerging in the water sector.
Under the leadership of the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, a high-level round table was held on April1st and 2nd in Yaoundé to launch the National Water Compact. This ambitious program aims to radically transform access to drinking water and sanitation by 2030.
The major announcement from this meeting is the total investment required: CFA 2,426 billion. While part of the funding is already secured through partners such as the World Bank, UNICEF, and the European Union, the government is calling for a general mobilization to bridge the financial gap.
For members of the SPX-CMR, this investment volume represents an unprecedented pool of opportunities across several trades:
- Civil Engineering & Infrastructure: Construction of water towers, pipe laying, and pumping stations.
- Industrial Maintenance: Maintenance of CAMWATER’s electromechanical equipment.
- Technology & Innovation: Smart metering solutions, billing digitalization, and optimized resource management.
The 4 pillars of structural reform
The Minister detailed a roadmap based on strategic axes where the expertise of local SMEs will be essential:
- Modernization of water and sanitation services.
- Promotion of productive water use to support the economy.
- Integrated resource management to preserve ecosystems.
- Strengthening governance and the institutional framework.
A call for local expertise
Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba emphasized the inclusive nature of this process. Cameroonian subcontracting companies are encouraged to prepare technically and financially to bid for future tenders arising from this Compact. The SPX-CMR will continue to closely monitor the roadmap to support its members in accessing these high-growth markets.
